What does it mean to say the police are 'doing parallels' as a method of tailing a vehicle?

They are not directly behind the suspect vehicle but are taking a parallel course to it.

Hmm. Not sure it's that. I've heard it mentioned in the context of 'parallels' being the reason why someone couldn't drop their police tail. Thinking from that that the police go down another parallel road maybe?
As I said, a parallel course.

It probably has something to do with parallel, yes. Are they on the same road? Are you certain this is why the term is used?
