right i just bought external hard drive and backed up most stuff but mostly im wondering if i re-format my mac would i loose all the music from my iTunes???

How did you back it up?

If you're using Time Machine, then everything except caches and a few other things are backed up.

With Time Machine, you can also recover your stuff on an external drive from the install DVD for Mac OS X.
