guests bringing wine for dinner at your place
when having a couple of friends round for dinner at your place (home) and they bring a nice bottle (or two) of wine with them, does one serve theirs first or save it until later (or not at all) ? obviously i already have my own chilling or warming. i never thought it mattered really, but am wondering if others think there is some sort of etiquette with this. thanks.

... Oh thanks, this looks nice. Shall I open it?
But more often, in advance, I say ...
... I'm really looking forward to seeing you. And oh, please don't bring anything because I've got something I'd like you to try. You can do it next time.

It would depend on the wine they brought and what is being made for dinner.
If you already have yours chilled/warmed then it would make more sense to use yours for dinner and offer to chill or warm theirs so you could have some later if wanted.
I would never assume when taking wine it would be used for dinner (unless say I was having dinner with people who preferred wine I didn't then I would take my own rather than having them cater for me separately) though I would take another bottle as I'd see it as a thank you gift for the meal to be enjoyed at their leisure and catered to them.
I'd tailor the wine I bought to the wine drinker it was for unless I'd previously asked if they would like me to bring a particular wine in line with what was being made for dinner or a nice dessert wine so they would be aware.

I'm luckily quite safe with my friends as we all enjoy more or less the same sorts of wines so I generally just say do you want this one first or the insert wine type I've got. I do have a couple of friends who are sisters and T prefers the easier drinking french reds to the wines L and I like so I always open her bottle for her.
More often than not though my lot ask what type of wine to bring and I generally tell them what I've got and say something of that ilk or if you don't fancy that, whatever you do feel like. I think with friends it's a lot easier than if you're laying on a dinner party for work collegues or something.

i am sorry do not know the correct ettiquete but I would always serve the wine I had bought to go along with the meal and accept what my friend brought as a gift. I only entertain close friends that if for example we ran out, I would not hesitate in opening what they brought. If I am taking wine along to a dinner party I do see it as a contribution/gift but certainly would not be upset if it was not used on the night.
