why do people single out people who choose to have s*x with the same s*x

basically after reading some of the comments on confusedCH question it got me thinking?

why do gay people( i hate saying it like that as if they are somewhat a different species, which they are not)
get singled out? and treated differently?

one of my friends is a lesbian, and she constanly gets talked about, because if she talks to another female, oh she must fancy them!!
does that mean i fancy every bloke i talk to?? i defo think not!!!

oh its gone 4 i should be at home and im tired of work!!!

I feel that my comments, and his, illustrate completely the points made in onlyme's OP.

He feels it to be completely acceptable to view gay people as 'other', and to be able to make sweeping and unkind generalisations.....................I do not.

I believe that the inbuilt fear that a lot of men have about gay people is based on fear.

The common concpetions - all gay men fancy anything in trousers, each gay couple must have a 'man and woman' role-playingpartner, nearly all lesbians are butch and ugly, nearly all gay men are effeminate ... the list goes on.

I have only known one lesbian couple well, and i was fascinated by the relatrionship dynamics which shifted constantly - nothing so stereotyped as a 'man / woman' scenario.

I know no gay men well enough to discuss their relatopnships, but would be interested so to do.

I believe that a hatred and fear of gay men in straight men is usually inherited from fathers - from a time when homosexuality was far less accepted than it is these days.

To be absolutly honest, in response to your question - gay people are different - but only in the sense that an aspect of their life differs from the majority, which leds itself to a raft of problems which are graudally being eradicated as each generation moves on.

I'm afraid that sterotypes exist because of ignorance and / or fear, and will continue so to do, as evidenced by the ferocity of some responses on here.

Stop knocking same sex relationships. I know men fantacise for the kinda six they want and IN THE END know they can get it from another man. ie Women!

Tis pointless to pedestal oneself at hetrasexual sex 'cause that's 'in the moment'. Things change thru life as do needs and wants.

See men in prison....they turn to other men for 'comfort and relief' as do women in same situation. As you age or are bereaved sex becomes less important....so then r u a eunuch?

believe it or not raggy i do agree with you on something!!
when you mentioned beauty levels or something like that

the world is a shallow place and whether we choose to believe it we are all a little shallow at times,

it is true, i do believe personally shines through in people and its the main basis for a relationship ( over looks anyway) but initially what is it that first attracts you to the person? ( this is only in some cases)
mainly its the looks, maybe nice teeth, or nice eyes?

i have seen people who i havent been attracted to, but then when i have spoke to them, i have thought ohhh he is nice, so dont get me wrong its not always looks that firstly attracts you to someone,

but people tend to be with other people to same sort of ( how do i put it???) beauty level???

Whatever we may tell ourselves, the fact is that as a Society, the majority who are similar to each other will always group together.

That's a primitive instinct, which still exists in the animal kingdom.

So (back to the original question) ...

If you are heterosexual, you will instinctively feel part of that group, and will see others as not a part of the group.

If you have a "minority" characteristic (say, red hair) you will not use that as the basis of your identity, except in specific contexts, where that characteristic is regarded as appealing (redheads) or clever (left handed people).
