Will a standard 56k modem in a UK laptop work in conjunction with US telephone systems?  Any advice on how they could?

Should do but you may have to alter a few settings. What is the model of the modem/laptop or is it built-in ?

Thanks Billy,

the modem is an Agere Systems AC97 built into a Hewlett Packard zt3000 laptop.  Any advice?

You will need to add the new country to the modem settings when abroad. This will allow the modem to work with the foreign phone system.

All you need to know here so I am claiming no credit !

Sorry for posting multiple times - my browser just threw a wobbly.

Was going to add that you may need a different flavour of modem cable.

I used mine without any problems re the modem. However, if you're in a hotel you may (probably will)  be paying expensive long distance call rates for diall up access.

Many US hotels now offer wi-fi connection.
