my mams been given a small tree like shrub for her garden the leaves are longish, brown orange and red, and woody stems, there is a cone like bud on some of the branches like a reddish purple colour poiinting upover, sort of like the candles on horsechestnut any idea what its called

Sounds like a Sumach Tree or 'Tree of Heaven'. If you google it you will find a lot of pictures. The leaves at this time of years would definitely fit your description. Lovely tree, but suckers come up all over the place.
