take my own heart rate. dont you count how many beats there is in 15 secs then double and add however many?? and what is normal heart rate?

If you count the beats in 15 seconds then you must multiply this result by 4 (4 x 15secs = 60secs) to attain the average bpm. You could count over 20 secs (x3), 30 secs (x2) or any other timescale you choose but you must then multiply (or divide if necessary) the count by the appropriate factor to equate the count back to bpm.

Resting heartrate tends to also indicate level of fitness. The lower it is, the more efficiently the heart is pumping blood around the body.
Athletes tend to have very low HR, in the 40's to 50's, whereas the average person, who probably doesn't exercise regulalry tends to have a resting heartrate in the 70's upwards.
