Fitted Kitchen (response to answer)

Doc.Spock - thank you for your reply.
Yes the cooker is free standing, there is more than 600mm between the cupboards and the side of the cooker, however there is only approx 300 - 400mm between the worktop and the cooker edge. The work top has the iron on edging next to the cooker - no metal trims fitted.
Should I be asking for this to be adjusted and fitted with metal edging before I continue to use the cooker?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.hi stuart there are a lot of measurements that apply to free standing cookers and the one that you are interested in is that of 20mm each side of the cooker, from a combustible surface.this is a regulation and should be adhered to.
if its an existing kitchen it may fall under "Not To Current Standards", which is understandable but a new kitchen should not have this problem
if the company fitted your cooker and presumably are CORGI registered theh have not met the standards required
BS 6172.
ps do you have any manufacturers /user instructions?
what do they say

whilst terence's answer is technically correct you will very rarely find a cooker in a fitted kitchen that does have the regulation gap between the cooker and the worktops, kitchen fitters and householders don't like a gap as it looks messy.
make sure that the top of the cooker is at least level or slightly higher than the worktop (never lower as when you put a pan on the burner the pan can spread the flames out towards the worktops.) and yes get some metal protective strips fitted on the sides of the worktop (if theres enough gap)
