FIRST bank

When visiting the U.S.A. I have noticed that banks invariably describe themselves as FIRST. For example. one may see a sign outside a bank with the words FIRST CITY BANK of CACTUSVILLE. One never seems to see SECOND or THIRD CITY BANK. I have enquired of the locals but never received a satisfactory explanation for this. I am sure there must be a simple and straight forward reason. Can anyone please explain its significence.
