healthy cooking oil
9 Answers
I've just purchased a deep fat fryer and was wondering if anyone knew which cooking oil is the healthiest to use. Thanks.

Perhaps the finest plate of chips I ever had was in lard-free Northern Cyprus - fresh local potatoes fried in olive oil.
The thing about olive oil is not to use the expensive extra virgine for deep frying. The refining process of pure olive oil - as opposed to virgine or extra virgine - actually helps to increase the smoke point (the temperature at which the oil starts to decompose).
Having said that, there is still a lot to be said for frying in lard. See the British Lard Marketing Board for details.
Your grannies probably led an extremely active life though, Smudge, e.g. doing housework without any mechanical or electrical aides, growing their own veg, walking over a mile to the shop daily for groceries, and they probably didn't have a tv set or computer games to sit in front of all day! As a nation we are a lot less active than our parents and grandparents, and are becoming even less so!
I get all of my oil from a shop called vomfass they have a website where you can buy the oil from at www.vomfassuk.com. They do some kick ass whiskies as well lol. Their a good company from my experience and they have always delivered in a couple of days. They also make great presents.
