In 1826, Sir Henry Samuel Eyre of the Eyre Estate launched a Turnpike Trust to help pay for the construction of the Finchley Road from Regents Park to Ballards Lane, one of the most imposing highways of its time. Amongst the first buildings by the Junction Road Toll Gate was a Swiss-style tavern originally called Swiss Cottage which gave the area its name, and now known as Ye Olde Swiss Cottage.
