Surd
I trust you mean irrational ROOTS. LOL.
Yapisle is correct, irrational roots are called surds....

Hehe...Catron, when I saw this question I immediately thought of the crazy places that satnavs can take you.....
Ha ha yes - quite so, Jugglelring ;-)
there is another expression when your satnav takes you uo the swannee ... $HIT
Irrational roots refer to the suare root, cube root etc of minus numbers e.g, square root of minus 1 (-1)..obviously there is no answer: what times itself can equal -1? But minus one in different terms can sensible..if you have ten pounds in your pocket and lose a pound accidentally then you have nine pounds you are -1 pound. Also - minus numbers can be added, subtracted or multiplied. eg
-2 x -2 = +4 etc.
So root of minus number, although used by maths nerds in equations needs a name: as earlier, the name is SURD.
Er, not really - surds can be, and I think are just as likely to be, positive - as in the square root of two, written in surd form as √2.
