A very cool and stylish person in the 1930s, who wore zoot suits and listened to jazz or swing music. The word 'hep', along with 'hip', is old-style US slang meaning aware or 'alive to'.
The origins of hep cat are, according to linguistic historians Turner and Myrdal, working in the 40s, from a West African dialect, and the word was originally hipicat, meaning one who was aware of their environment, literally 'has his eyes open', hence the 'alive to' slang.
