Is the answer BELVILLE - the stately home in Julia de Roubign by Henry Mackenzie?

Hi JD - is this of any use?..

In "The Rivals" by Richard Brinsley Sheridan is a character called Julia Melville who is in love with Faulkland, a friend of Jack Absolute... (?)

Thanks lie-in-king, I wasn't convinced by Belville. I will investigate further to see if this Absolute fellow protected Julia.

Question Author
Yes, it seems Julia offers protection to her ward Lydia from the scheming Jack Absolute.

Thanks again, I can get on with the TLS Autumn acrostic now.
Glad to have helped :-)

Just as a by-the-by, I've never heard "HMHB" - any good?

Well, they're my favourite band, but I think they divide people's opinion - John Peel loved them.

They also come from my neck of the woods (Merseyside ) and are my age (mid 40s), so I get all the references.

Looks interesting! I'm definitely going to find some & have a listen - I'll let you know! :-)

I'm always keen to try new (to me!) music, so thanks to both you & the sainted Peel...
