AOL Router Login

Can anyone tell me the router settings for AOL
Am I right in assuming its PPOE for ASDL, (Telephone number) 0144965***[email protected] for login

Thats exactly what I had until last weekend; then I lost my connection. Some chap from AOL support told me to login using the PPPOE login and it worked until yesterday. Now I have nothing.
AOL however inform me that they offer no support for Linux, but why that should affect the router is beyond me.

Linux won't effect the router

PPPoA is the "normal" protocol to use on a BT phone line, unless your local loop has been unbundled then PPPoE is the one you need to use. (even though AOL say always use PPPoE)

If you are using PPPoA then make sure your Multiplexing Method is set to VC based (or VC-MUX)

AOL won't support anything other than windows and Mac, and will not help you unless you are using one of their routers, this is so they can employ monkeys for support staff that are barely capable of following on screen prompts for each situation!

If it won't connect on either PPPoE or PPPoA then I'd suggest trying a different ADSL filter on the socket the routers pluged into.

What do you mean " Local loop has been unbundled" as BT carried out some alterations to my telephone prior to all this happening.

Local loop unbundling (LLU) means that your ISP has installed their own equipment into the exchange so you have a direct connection to their network rather then going through BT's network first

The current 24Mb ADSL connections that are being advertised are only available on LLU so if you goto AOL's site and check the service availability on your postcode or phone number if it says anything over about 12mbs then you are on a unbundled exchange and you need to use PPPoE

Thanks for your input ChuckFickens, Its been really helpful.
I gave up in the end and installed win2k on a USB stick and had another go with AOL.
I am PPPoE and logged in as my [email protected], although the AOL man dosn't know why! AOL gave me a new password (different to my AOL login) and it was really that simple.
After two weeks of numerious phone calls and hassle, I think I might move to a broadband provider who has a British call centre. Any one know of or could reccommend one.
