We have a 1987 Mccalls pattern for a toy which we would like to make & sell - is the copyright still valid?

Copyright lasts for life of the author, plus 70 years. That is, unless the droit-de-suite is initiated and the copyright sold on to another party as a resale right. This is assuming you're in the UK.
Your question suggests to me the pattern is like a fabric design, perhaps? I'm unsure of what exactly the item or design is- you may find that it was a functioning trademark, which may last indefinitely.
Alternatively, you may have meant a 'patent' for a toy? This would be a whole different game.
Assuming the pattern was copyrightable in the first instance, I really don't suggest you make, distribute or in any way duplicate it- it's not worth the potential hassle. Let us know what the pattern is, and I'm sure someone will be around to help you further...
