The Italian Prime Minister is Giuliano Amato. He is standing in the general elections on 13 May for the Olive Tree alliance, the governing centre-left group of parties. Amato is a former member of the Socialist party led by the disgraced Bettino Craxi. Olive Tree faces a strong challenge from centre-right parties around former PM Silvio Berlusconi.
