What worries me is the paucity of factual knowledge they seem have.
I know there's a lot of emphasis on not imposing our view of the world on the next generation because after all "there are no real facts, it's all opinion". Well as far as I'm concerned Geography where kids don't learn where the continents and the countries are and where the major mountain ranges and rivers are, isn't Geography. Ditto History, if you don't get a sense of the overall sweep of what's gone on in the world since people started writing down what happened round about them. Maths seems to have escaped to a degree, but English has suffered greatly. No emphasis on spelling, vocabulary, reading and writing for information or appreciation of the beauty that exists in a language well spoken.
Thankfully the best of our children realise the deficiencies for themselves and go looking for better sources. Unfortunately the others come away with their ignorance and shallowness apparently validated by a certificate that isn't worth the paper it's written on.
I think most mature students would stand a great chance of making the grade in a modern university - but be prepared for lots of arguments!

I didn't go to uni, but I did go to a technical college to study on a computer course which included learning COBOL and FORTRAN computer languages. It was difficult to start off with, but then I soon got the hang of it,and the lady tutor who taught me COBOL thought I was very good with my work.I made a few friends while I was there too.During free periods while the teachers were away,we had a quick go on the computer games which was fun.
On the last day, when I left, I felt a bit sad as we all went our separate ways.I never saw those friends again.

I have an OU degree .Not something to boast about .Just something I did to prove to myself I could do it .
My parents were never in a position to send me to university much as my teachers at the time argued the point .I had to get off my arse and go to work .
Having said that I have learnt so much in the University of Life ,things that a university could never had taught me :)
Academics are often so wrapped up in their own little worlds they have no idea what goes on the real world .
You only have to watch University Challenge to see how they only really know about their own subjects .They can answer things about nuclear physics but .....
Jeremy Paxman: What is another name for cherrypickers and cheesemongers?
Contestant: Homosexuals.
Paxman: No. Theyre regiments in the British Army who will be very upset with you.

Many have degrees from here, at reasonable charges and in your own time.....with a tutor/supporter.

And ..my husband worked with lots of graduates in his field of employment .They used to turn up with their bit of paper that said they were qualified in so and so .But when you got down to real nitty gritty they had no idea .
I remember my youngest applying for a job at British Gas Turned down because he didn't have a degree.
Speaking to a chap a while later who was one of the old style gas engineers ,he told me that he was fed up with graduates and their bits of paper ,who could do it all on paper but when it came to getting their hands dirty they had no idea and then had the cheek to tell a man of many years experince how to do do his job !
