I'm looking to change my car and have narrowed the search down to two cars - a BMW 323 coupe (about an R reg) or a Fiat Coupe (about T/V reg). The Fiat would be newer and sportier, but does not have the prestige or comfort of the BMW. Any suggestions ?

They hold their price really well, look gorgeous and show a certain type of status (although that 'status' is either cool or laughable these days). The BMWs rear wheel drive will give it a sporty edge but that can be a disadvantage if you're not used to driving one, especially in the wet/snow.
The Fiat on the other hand is newer, looks like a proper sportscar and much rarer. I think you'll have to see what extras are on both cars and then see if you can give one a test drive!
There was an earlier post on here from someone considering a Fiat Coupe, look that one up for opinions on that model. The Beemer is a good car, but that also counts against it, everyones got one! They also are less well equipped, and not as much fun to drive as the Fiat. I guess the BMW will be better built, so might hold its value better, but the fact that they are so common makes them a buyers market. Have you considered the best coupe of the lot at the age/price bracket you are considering? namely the VW Corrado VR6, all the class and build quality of the BMW, plus the performance and better handling than the Fiat. Also one of the best engines ever put in a mass produced road car.
You've probably made your decision by now, but if you haven't I have both cars and the Fiat wins hands down.
The feel and power of the Fiat is in a league of its own.
The BMW is like driving around in your arm chair (a very quick arm chair).
The FIAT is different and stunning, and uses a lot less juice.
