Hope this isn't too personal & don't wish to upset anyone, but.....
Are you an only child, or have you only had one child?
If so, do you wish you'd had siblings, or other children?
I'm asking on behalf of my friend, who for medical reasons, could only have one child. Her daughter, now 43, doesn't want children & my friend does get a bit upset at times that she'll never have grandchildren, or an extended close family.

Your friend might really like her job Smudge, and I hope I am not being presumptious, but there are so many nice things you can do at retirement age where you can get involved in something that you may have always wanted to do, but couldn't because of work and family commitments.
It might help your friend to find a new hobby or a new interest and get herself a new lease of life! This might cheer her up and take her mind of what could have been.
She could go on a safari or go overseas as a voluntary worker (open to retirees now).
She needs to fill her life up with nice things to take her mind off of what she thinks she has lost. We can't lose what we never had!

She does have quite a highly powered job (so did I once), but I think another reason she doesn't want to retire quite yet, is because her husband did so last year! She says that it'll be a novelty at first for them to do things together, but that it will soon wear off!
That's the price you pay of living to work & not working to live!
I'm already quite busy with one thing & another, but when my husband retires, we'll be even busier out & about!
You only live once!
