Is my dog sick or is this normal?

My two male dogs have a greenish discharge from their penis. They seem healthly enough as they are still active and eating etc. Is this normal for dogs or should I take them to a vet? Vets are so expensive just for a consultation fee.

there are probably fine butt I would take them anyway. Better safe than sorry.

This is probably Balanoposthiritis, which occurs most commonly in un-neautered male dogs. Your vet'll probably want to do a full examination, under anesthetic, to make sure there are no foreign bodies in area. A blood test can also rule out tumours and other problems.
Antii-bitotics are sometimes given, along with advice to have the dog neutered. this should cure the problem.
Vets DO charge a lot of money, but you have to be prepared for this if you have a pet. If you're on a low income or not working, contact the PDSA. A private vet may allow you to pay in instalments.

How much discharge is there?

Is it very milky/pale or dark in colour?

Some dogs do have a very slight discharge, usually very pale/milky green.

My male dog has had this on and off for most of his life (he is now 13) and it has never been a problem.

I'm with kita on this one. My last, un-neutered, male GSD had this and he was perfectly fine in every other way. Don't worry - maybe phone your vet for a chat to put your mind at rest, but I suspect it's nothing.

A lot of dogs have a minor discharge from their penis, but if it is balanitis they may need antibiotics to clear it up, otherwise they can end of making themselves sore by constant licking and can also spread the infection. It can also be caused by herpes, so a vet check would be a good idea.
