Hiya
It can take up to 6 weeks to get it back my friend had the same problem and hes been told 5 weeks.
There doesnt seem to be any quicker way to sort this out.
if youve had the car a while then you dont need the log book as you get a form via post to use for getting tax.
this letter will also give you the website details for taxing your car online too

by the way its now the 5th of the month. the car should be off the road and sorn until you get the tax disc.
Have you had the tax reminder letter? You can use the letter (along with your insurance and MOT documents) to tax the vehicle at a Post Office, or use the reference number from it when taxing on-line. I've never used the "log book" {V5 form} to tax my car.

Otherwise, ring the DVLA for their advice.

We lost our log book (like you it was here somewhere) but we called DVLA, told them we had lost it and they took details and for 25 we got a new one. The book arrived within a week

We also phoned DVLA to get the car tax so as for it not to be without tax - it can be done on the phone without a log book and be with you in 5 days - probably the shortest length of time to wait
I just had this problem and because I spent so long searching for my registration doc I could no longer use the reminder or the post office for getting my tax

I phoned DVLA for a copy reg doc and they said I would have to wait for that to come through before I went to the post office so a delay of a week or so

Alternitively .... I could go to the local DVLA office and provided I pay 25 for a copy reg doc there and pay for my tax then I would get a tax disc on the spot, my reg doc should be in the post

So in total it took me about 15 mins to get tax with no reg doc and I am now totally legal
