Is there a setting for PAL/NTSC on the laptop TV Output? It may be set to NTSC which could acount for Black and White (alternatively the TV may have both options for the SCART input).
I owned a TI computer [16k] in the early 80's which was connected to the TV but it needed to go via a special connecting box, you couldn't connect direct, but everything was in b&w then anyway

if it were the PAL/NTSC setting how would i change this as im not too clever with computers
Erm.. depends on the laptop - it may be in the display settings but if you're not too sure what to do I'd probably steer clear of changing things here to start with (it is possible to completely screw up the display settings!).

Have you got your TV manual? There may be a way of changing the AV (SCART) input so it displays properly.
I came upon this problem when I was working in the tv business and it was the tv setting for the scart socket. I needed to be set to receive an RGB signal. This was done with a menu on the tv, so it may be worth checking the tv manual to see if this is the problem.
