I called through to BTYahoo! on their behalf and their agent told me that this was an ongoing issue for Yahoo and had been for some time. It seems to be caused by various differing reasons.
1) This may be a temporary glitch with the part of Yahoo you are trying to access. I was advised to tell cust to just sit there and keep trying to log in over and over again - apparently eventually you should get logged in. (I'm not sure that this will work although its worth a try)
2) Your proxy server settings may be wrong in IE - check that your server settings are configured correctly. (If you are unsure how to do this, contact your ISP ofr further info.)
3) Your IP address may have been blocked by Yahoo. All ISP's are now blocking massive amounts of dynamically assigned IP addresses as these are the ones where the most problems come in from. Contact your ISP and find out if you are static (same fixed IP address all the time) or dynamic (different IP address each time you connect). If you're static they can check and see if Yahoo have blocked it and apply to have it unblocked. If you're dynamic try disconnecting for about an hour and try reconnecting and force a new IP to be assigned - it may fix the problem.
4) Yahoo may just be very, very busy at the time at the time you are trying to log in and cannot deal with your request Try logging in at a different time of day and see if that makes any difference.
Incidentally, what ISP do you use to connect? And which part of Yahoo are you trying to log into - .com/.co.uk/mail/groups etc?
Hope this helps!
