The clues to this have already been posted on this site and these helped me. With regard to pile - think of a floor covering + a car test +H from hospital and the result is a flying insect - good luck'

I am also struggling with No.53 - can you give me any help with this

53 is "did appear" with "a" removed ie lost.

Thanks for the hints - have got it now. Number 53 has already had a hint given - and gives the answer, but you would have to check with a dictionary because it si not one you or I woud have hard of!

I wondered that too but assumed that carpet was slang name for a 3 month prison sentence but maybe I am worng - can anyone enlighten us??
