Trying to remember a book.. its driving me mad !

I read a book about 3 years ago about a young boy who grew up in the 1970s on a council estate in Croydon. It is a story about abuse and neglect by his alcoholic mother and father, his struggle and how he has now turned his life around. Can anyone help me on the author/title ? Many thanks.

The Kid by Kevin Lewis ?
He thenwrote the Kid Moves On and another couple of novels
I think he lived in New Addington .

Sounds like 'The Kid' to me.

Kevin is now a crime novelist and a pretty good one at that.
