I recently bought the box set of Fawlty Towers on dvd.I was watching The Germans episode this morning and there is a scene between the Major & Basil. The Major uses the word N*gger & W*g a few times.Which got me thinking would the BBC get away with showing this episode nowadays?.Now that everything seems to be so PC.

Probably not these days, or they'd censor it. FT still gets shown on UK gold though. Fawlty towers is mild compared to the seventies sitcoms, "Love they Neighbour" and "Till death us do part" very un PC!

I read something not long ago about an early episode of 'Only Fooks and Horses' where they make a reference to a P*ki shop.

Apparently this had to be changed to corner shop before it was allowed to be repeated recently.

You say you saw it dvd, gerry. Those words would certainly be cut on terrestrial TV, but not on cable, I suspect. "It Ain't Half Hot, Mum" never gets a BBC1 repeat - far too un-PC, especially with a white man ( the marvellous Michael Bates) playing an Indian. Ironically, it means that the Indian and Pakistani actors who WERE in the series are being denied lucrative repeat fees.

Yes rogK this did feature on the dvd.I'm guessing this is also one of the reasons why the BBC no longer show repeats of Are You Being Served.Due to Mrs Slocombe & her pussy.

but were love thy neighbour and till death us do part racist ?

certainly the main character was racist but in both cases he was also an idiot intimating that being a racist was not a good thing to be !

and saying **** shop in only fools - is that racist ? **** is just short for pakistani the same as scot is short for scottish, brit short for british, yank short for american etc etc

A similar thing happens when "The Dambusters" film is shown. Guy Gibsons dog is called ****** but on some channnels this is bleeped out. .
If theres such a thing as reincarnation,I am want to come back as a Black Lesbian Gypsy traveller asylum seeker !!!
mattk - i think saying **** shop is only offensive because of the point you yourself made - you don't say the scot shop or brummie shop just because the owner is from there. it is a form of 'them and us' thinking
interesting that p*ki is deleted entirely by AB when scot, brummie, brit etc, aren't...

I find it sad that the name of Guy Gibson's dog is blanked out. Is this censorship really necessary?
If people were using this forum to hurl insults at each other, then fair enough. But Zen made a valid contribution to an interesting thread that was rendered nearly unusable by asterisks.
Thank goodness for Google - I discovered there the dog's name rhymes with "bigger".

It was just a sign of the times and i personally don't think any censorship is needed. I am not racist, but I'm fed up with all this PC and un-PC stuff. What's the point in changing our history to suit a changing country and making everyone paranoid about what they should or shouldn't be saying. What ever happened to freedom of speech !
