Until the widesprad discovery of oil in the 19th century, sperm whale oil was used for just about all oily requirements, mostly in lamps. It stank really badly though and was obviously extremely difficult to get at not exactly in abundance compared to fossil fuels. Nantuket island was where most of it was processed and the whole place could be smelled from several miles out to sea
