Why is it that when I start to use my steam iron a huge amount of dirt/sand comes through the steam vents. Could it have to do with the fact that our water is hard? What can I do to avoid this?

Think it just needs a descale. Think you buy special liquid to do it but unsure
Do you empty the iron of water after each use? If not then that can cause a build up of limescale in the reservoir. You can buy a sachet of solution for descaling your iron, they are usually found in the laundry detergent section of supermarkets,or can be bought in hardware shops.
Once it's clean, you could use bottled water instead of tapwater.

use kettle descaler works just the same.
Wouldn't using cooled boiled water from the kettle work the same as anything you'd buy in a shop?
just send your stuff to the chinese laundrey

no hassle lol
