I like "Crossword Lists" edited by Anne Stibbs, published by Bloomsbury. It doesn't answer everything but covers quite a bit of general knowledge. Might help.

Many thanks, I'll have a look at it.
A very useful book is "An A to Z of (almost) Everything" compiled by Trevor Montague - founder of the British Quiz Association. I have had mine for a few years (2003) so it has probably been updated. It has sections on abbreviations, capitals of the world, music, cinema, history, nature, politics, science, etc. The only problem is you go to look something up and get distracted so it takes you ages! It is a Daily Telegraph publication.
P.S. It is a paperback so it is not too big and heavy.
I agree A to Z excellent. Revised and updated 2008 (25 hardback), but probably at a discount somewhere.
