i have been told you get a better exchange rate when you withdraw money at an atm abroad rather than changeing the money before i go on holiday

True for the most part. Depends a bit on your card as to how much better - and on where you would get the cash here - but in general you are likely to do better with the card.

Make sure it's a debit card - the above goes out of the window with a credit card as there will be interest payments.



Just to clarify dzug�s last point � it�s not interest that gets you (when you use a credit card to withdraw cash), they typically charge 3% up front for a cash withdrawl � you will pay interest if you don�t pay off the balance, in full, at the relevant time.
Also, get a card that doesn't charge for using it abroad. Currently I think only Nationwide and the Post Office do this.
