Anyone else noticed that Kate Mepham slipped up by asking us in 26 down for the German novelist awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946- yet Hesse is Swiss not German?

Herman hesse was born in Calw..The Black Forest which is in Germany
Herman Hesse was born in Germany, but he took Swiss nationality in 1883 and again in 1924.

One cannot choose where we are born, but Herman Hesse chose to be Swiss and to spend a great deal of his life in Switzerland.

He is best described as a German-Swiss writer.

I would say that you are all correct.
