Driving in Cape Town

I'm travelling to South Africa in September. I'm considering hiring a car in Cape Town, in order to visit the Cape of Good Hope and also north along the coast. Is driving in Cape Town safe? I have heard stories of car-jacking in Johannesburg but Cape Town seems relatively safe - is this correct?

Thanks

Nowhere in SA is totally safe. Its perfectly legal not to stop at red lights at night time in Cape Town as it is throughout SA
I echo that. It's not now safe anywhere in SA and some places are plain dangerous, especially if you don't fit in. Stick to busy areas and the main tourist areas cml. Don't wander off the beaten track into quiet areas and be especially careful at night. Try to stay in after dark if you can.

Many thanks for your input folks. I'll very much bear your advice in mind and perhaps look to join a locally organised tour instead.

No one stops at red lights at night, only use a cab that is recommended by your hotel. It is volatile at the moment ... life is cheap to some out there. I will still be visiting this year but will be being more careful than ever. It is very easy to be fed, watered and enjoy yourself without straying too far from the city.
It's still whale watching season make sure you allow time to stop off in Hermanus on your drive.

We have been to South Africa many times and have driven thousands of miles ...and never felt unsafe.
Naturally you stay away from the beaten track, don't give anyone a lift etc....but let's be honest here...this also applies in the UK.

Johannesburg,I personaly do not feel safe there but this is probably because I love the Western Cape and the Garden Route.

South Africa is a truely lovely country of outstanding beauty.

Love to hear how you got on.
