Mmmm - It says water, seawater and oil. No mention of molten metal though. But ........ I can't see what else it can be.

My dictionary is an old one it lists as well sea water oil etc but definitely states molten metal

In the process of producing molten metal, there is a thing called a "dump truck". Maybe the hole is called a "dump"?

May I?.. My Chambers edition's no help, but OED (Online) gives -

sump - � Metallurgy. A pit of stone or metal at a furnace to collect the metal at the first fusion�"The metal is tapped off into an iron sump."
