If you want to know whether the UK authorities will be able to lock him up if he comes here, the short answer is no. Being a paedophile is not of itself illegal, acting on those impulses is.
Since the man in question has not committed any offences in the UK, and has served his sentence in Australia, there's very little that they can do. Having said that, he will be required to register on the Sex Offender's Register and to regularly report to a police station.
There are a series of recommendations currently in a consultation period, which you can read about here:
Well, in a way being a paedophile will keep you locked up. If he had run his sentence in the UK, he would probably still be in jail under UK law, since he is 'low to moderate risk', ie could reoffend, so will be kept in jail to protect children.
Put it this way. Would you let your kids out to play in the garden if there was a paedophile living free next door who had been classified as 'low to medium risk'?
'Oh, he's low to medium risk, that's ok then'. Chances must be pretty low then. The guy was let out on parole 3 times and reoffended each time!! Beginning to see a pattern? Not much in the news about the kids....
Yeah, El D, I saw one of the Aussie top brass being interviewed about it "He's only classified as low to medium threat. Which is why we're releasing him." [sudden moment of truth where he realizes 'medium risk' paedophile on street might be bad thing]. "But I don't think any risk is an acceptable risk. Which is why he's being extradited."
Soo....you lock convicted paedophiles up to protect not any child, but only children in your own country. Niiice....
