i`ve noticed some flying ants in the garden, does this mean they are looking for somewhere to nest as last year our garden was crawling with ants and nothing we tried shifted them.I have 2 young children (one toddling, one about to learn to crawl) I dont want them getting bitten by ants this summer when they play on the grass. Is there anything I can do now before spring comes,to prevent ants from nesting in the grass?Ta.

I can understand your concern for your children, but am a bit confused about your sighting of flying ants in March. They don't fly until the hot sultry days in late June or July - unless of course you don't live inthe UK.
must agree with Cetti don't see how they can be flying ants ..to early
The battle does appear to have begun early this year. I had trouble with ants in my vestibule a couple of weeks back. I reckoned the cold snap had driven them to look for warmth. I've not seen any flying ants, but I don't usually have any trouble until much later in the year.
To avoid the worst of the problems, we find the nests, put down ant killer powder, and wait. They move along very quickly after that. More environmentally friendly is to put down hot water. Finding the nests should be fairly easy - under stones or concrete is a favourite, but just follow the ants!
My back yard is swarming with flying ants as I write. I thought they were just flies but under close examination I realised they are ants. The recent warm weather has bought them out and once the males have mated they die, hopefully in a couple of days. If the queen survives she will make a nest.
Yes, I too have an infestation of flying ants - air is thick with them. It is proving impossible to find the nest unfortunately, can anyone oofer some advice of what to do.
