The connection he currently has is called VGA and as long as the new monitor has that (I think all have) then you should be OK.
Not sure what size monitor you plan to buy, but do get one that is too big (screen size) as the graphics card may not be able to drive it.
I would say a 17" or 19" would be good enough.
I have to say if his PC is 7 years old it is probably time to buy a whole new PC and not just a monitor!

possibly not
wide screen wasn't about 7 years ago - so it's unlikely that yours will have the correct resolution setting .... you'll end up with short very fat space invaders ;(
it's a bit of a price jump to buy a new machine ... but a cheap desktop will come with a monitor ... and deedn't cost lots (7 year old ... any modern machine will feel faster)
how does a 19" telly sound ... that just happens to have a PC connector? - that way you get something
