I would suggest that the main changes are that they are now allowed to advertise their services, which used to be banned, and the introduction of "no win no fee" which I believe was also not allowed. These have both revolutionised the litigation side of the business and made it more commercial. By the way, this is very much a lay person's view, and I am not party to any of the internal/technical/less public changes which may have happened.
