Melodies to Lyrics

When people like simon and garfunkel, Kurt cobain, etc put melodies to lyrics how did they do it?

I think it very much depends on the individual.  In my very limited experience of trying to write songs: the tune or chords came first by just playing around on my guitar.  I love the fact the way you can come up with something that sounds cool just by putting your finger on the wrong fret or string.  The lyrics always came after the tune- usually influenced by what I've heard someone say.  A friend of mine used to sit and write down everything the group of us were saying to get inspiration (a bit distracting!)

It's usally trial and error, modifying tune and lyrics till they fit. Sometimes you can have the tune for ages till you find the right words, or vice versa.

I should really get my guitar out again....
