Wouldn't it be best for the Bars/Nightclubs to impose a rule "no one wearing high heels allowed in"?

They will just put these free flip flops in their handbags, and save them up for use around the house or around the pool in the summer.

Flip flops are quite impractical for winter and indeed they're not great for walking home toddled in, especially if it's raining. I can see people having more accidents with them on actually.

So yes, I agree, quite ridiculous.

This is money well spent. It's part of a campaign to raise awareness about binge drinking and avoiding accidents. They even print the slogans on the flip flops to ram that point home.

They could have spend the money on a couple of radio ads and a few billboards. Instead they spent �30k on this (not much in advertising terms as you know) and look - the Daily Mail has a big story on it, you're talking about and I'm talking about it. I dare says loads of other people are too.

For �30k, that's bloody good.

Truthfully it's a silly idea, I've seen many people fall over drunk whilst wearing very sensible shoes, myself included.
More often than not women take their shoes off at night on the walk home if they're struggling, perhaps the Police would be better employed tackling the litter louts and dog pooists to ensure a safer journey home.

If I was young and out on the binge I dont think a pair of free flip flops, for the return home, would deter me from drinking again. I would't think it is likely to have much impact in consequence.
I have no complaint with new initiatives, but they have to be like advertising, aimed at hitting the right audience. This just sounds like a gimmick to me>

No, seriously. Think of it as an advertising campaign that's worked out to be very good value. You all know that the police have a budget for this kind of thing? It would either be spent on useless billboards or this. And this has worked.

Strange and not in the least predictable isn't it Bertie.

Flip flops get slippery when wet and fall of your feet causing you to trip.

Flip flops have no grip when it comes to slippery and wet platforms.

When drunk it's very hard to muster the necessary co-ordination (all be it minimal) required to keep flip flops attached to your feet.

When attempting to run for a bus, even if sober, flip flops would not be a shoe of choice... stilelltos would be preferable frankly.

Flip flops have been known to be lost on many a stair case... again, drunk or sober.

So I really hope it is an advertising thing as Quin suggested because it really is a ridiculous idea... I'm sure I should be appalled at the cost but i guess I should have gone in to health and safety!

I remember back home there was something similar going on (I don't think they were giving flip-flops though - it was something else). Difference was, shoes were handed out by nightclubs rather than the police.

I can sort of understand the idea (though I'm not really conviced by it), but I don't see that it's the job of the police. Surely police/local authorities could just request club owners do it instead?

Take another similar development in nightclubs - it's increasingly common for clubs to supply small rubber domes for people to put on their stiletto heels so they don't damage the floor. Surely a scheme like this could easily (and less wastefully) be done in a similar way?
