Altering one letter in each word can you progress from WEED to LUST in 7 stages...i.e...creating 5 common words in between...

I will be pleasantly surprised, if any one can do it in fewer words..

Congrats Timconor...It was different to my solution, all your words were different to mine, but just as valid....I wouldn't think that FEST / LEST / LEED / LEET are perceived as common words!
