Be careful what you eat, there are still cases of food poisoning reported from DomRep, more than from other Caribbean countries. Check out the Thorn Tree posts in the Caribbean section on www.lonelyplanet.com
google for www.debbiesdominicantravel.com for info. i'm going in three weeks for the second time. so that should say something. have a good trip! p.s, north or south?
Best advice is leave your resort! Most people go all inclusive adn never get out. The mountains are beautiful, and go white water rafting if you get chance. Nice, easy, safe place to dive as well. Many countries have food poisoning problems, so eat out carefully, and check your hotel uses safe water to wash salads etc.

Take a lot of good books or magazines as it gets quite boring.  Lovely beaches, nice complexs but after day 5 you will have eaten at every restaurant and done all the free snorkelling and windsurfing etc

Also take some diahorrea tablets just in case of food poisoning.

Try and get out of your resort every other day otherwise you'll get stir crazy seeing the same people and eating/drinking the same stuff.

my aunt, uncle and their 5 kids go there on holiday (from canada) regularly. they love it!
One strange thing they say is that the maids in the hotel rooms love it if instead of a cash tip, you bring along some cute little things like hair bobbles, hair clips etc from claire's accessories and leave them a few packs when you go. Apparently they love them to do their daughters' hair and you can't really buy them so much over there. probably cheaper than a cash tip too!
If you are going all inclusive be careful of what trips you go on organised by your rep, the ones we went on were a  rip off, swimming with sharks was the worst, the sharks were in an underwater cage and were really frightened, it cost around US$100. also be careful on your way back with the weight of your luggage, the airport check in is very stringent and you will be charged US$10 for every kilo you are over! some of the people on our flight were charged in excess of US$300 for going over their allowance and they are not at all leniant!
