Making your own plate

There is a process in which a child's drawing is permanently fused to a melamine plastic plate. It was a popular arts and crafts project in the 80's. What is the exact process used to fuse the picture to the plate? Most companies make you mail in the plate, which leaves the actual process a mystery. I am interested in making my own plates and bypassing the company. So, how its it done? And can I accomplish the task on my own?
