I have a 1996 Renault Megane which runs perfectly but lately I'm getting a high pitched whine in some gears and depending at which speed I'm driving. I know I'm a complete loss when it comes to car mechanics but say I change up into 2nd and it starts to whine, if it put my foot down to increase the revs it stops making the noise. This doesn't happen on every journey and It occurs in various gears. Any ideas? TIA

Well, that makes two of us! (So I'm certainly not claiming any great expertise here). However, simple experience makes me want to suggest that you should investigate the possibility of a slipping fan belt (which can lead to intermittent whining sounds from under the bonnet).

As stated, I'm no expert but I hope that I'm right because it takes only a minute or two to fix, so it shouldn't cost you much. (My local mechanic would do it for free).
