This small West Yorkshire town that I'm stranded in for a few months yet.

Patience is a virtue. :-(

I was born in Hull and it is not the worst town in Britain. Like every town everywhere it has its bad parts, but the people are warm big hearted and the centre is lovely and so much has been done to it after the blitzing it got during the war.   Hull is a town of flowers, the gardens in the centre are just wonderful and some of the roads leading into Hull especially the one from the Humber Bridge are a riot of colour and has beautiful weeping willow trees along the way.   True it has suffered badly when the fishing industry died but its a tryer!  I love going back visiting my relatives.
Slough is the most ugly, depressing place I ever worked. It's not so much a town as an industrial wilderness that stinks of chocolate (Mars factory). Milton Keynes is the second worst.
LOL - I was going to nominate Slough too! It's one big industrial park - the rest of it is an afterthought. Even the name, short of course for Slough of Despondency :-), sounds depressing, the way you don't so much say it as let it fall out of your mouth.

As a confirmed Southerner, I don't know enough about Northern towns to comment on Hull or any others, but other Southern places I'd give "honourable" mentions to in the crap stakes are Dagenham, Basingstoke and Aldershot. Actually, Aldershot isn't so much "crap" as "terrifying".

I had fairly close associations with Scunthorpe during the 1990s, and echo all that In A Pickle says. ;-)
Widnes(merseyside)is as grimy as it sounds
LEICESTER...I live there and I want out I really really do...lived here all my life and need a change from this dreary, dismal city of people who are incapable of smiling to one another...it really is a sad sad place....
Nelson is probably one of the worst examples of a town going! you can buy a row of houses ( 10 ) for about 10,000 ( for the lot! ). Disgusting, imigrant infested town.
Where is Nelson?
free!
Answer to In a Pickle, not sure why Hull was never referred to as Kingston upon Hull, (except on Letter Headings and official documents etc), perhaps its because we are not posh in Hull, just down to earth.  I agree with you about the fair, though its shrunk in recent years due to the New Sports Stadium taking over much of the ground.
Nelson Lancashire
ICEMANSAV - if you are from Nelson, do you know a guy called Graham Walton?
I don't live in Nelson, I think I would have killed myself had that been the case! Don't know the chap you mentioned sorry! I live in a small village on the outskirts
