I have to say I always thought Roy Keane would never make a good manager.

When he had the early success at Sunderland I was ready to eat my words and I changed my mind (maybe even become the next United manager)

But one thing I read a few years ago made me realise he has not got the right temperment to be a manager.

He was with the Ireland squad, and he came down to breakfast and a new young player in the squad said to Keane "morning mate".

Keane replied "I'm not your mate"

I dont think Keane liked other playrs (or even liked people) and I dont think other players liked him.

They were glad he was in their team because he was a winner, but that does not mean to say they had to like him.

He is too much of a loner to be a great manager.

And for the Haland tackle he should have got six months in prison and banned from the game for a year.

Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to respond. My underlying memory of Keane will be: a fabulous player and (big) part of a very good Man. United team. But, also someone who let himself down time and again with unecessary boorish behaviour. Chasing the referee to the touch-line, a number of crass challenges (didn't he also give a "right-hander" to a girl in a night-club)? I know he isn't alone in the long line of thugs to have played the beautiful game, believe me. One of my favourite all-time players is Dennis Wise and I think he is every bit as bad, possibly even worse, because he didn't even have Keane's talent.

What I think this thread has proved is the need to get the Sports Section of this site up to date.

Plus the majority of Irish players qualify due to the fact that their great grandfather had a pint of guiness once.

Don't forget Cascarino, he thought he had Irish ancestry but in fact had none.

He did'nt want to play in the world cup, he denied someone else the chance, a lot of the Irish squad were'nt Irish.
He's spent a lot of money at Sunderland, so he deserved to go.

VHG, the incident about the "I`m not your mate" quote was blown out of proportion, it was said in jest, it was picked up by the tabloids and used against Keane

123everton....You have got Wisey summed up perfectly. I hated the little sh1t when he was at Wimbledon and I don't give a monkeys what he gets up to now. But, when someone pulls on YOUR clubs shirt and shows that much enthusiasm for someone with such little ability, you kind of warm to them. I suppose its a football thing.
