But the fashonable skinny world we live in I can see really vain people these days saying how light their baby is, like the joke about a women being happy she is slim and saying she's back to her birth weight.
I think most parents mention it though because its like tradition, back in the days people didnt have much excitement in their lives or anything but the weather to talk about, they created all these stupid traditions we get stuck with today.

It is nice to know the baby's weight, for relatives and friends wishing to buy baby clothes for the new arrival, especially if they don't live close enough to visit. Particularly, when baby arrives unexpectedly/prematurely. Or as in the instance of the arrival of my friend's baby who weighed 11lb at birth, and was immediately in need of 3mths to 6mths clothes.
Goes back to the days of "Baby Competitions" where the fattest and ugliest was acclaimed the winner, much to the self satisfaction of the parents. Now when the weight is announced, everyone smiles and says something stupid like " that's a good weight" or "really" ...totally senseless and meaningless.
