I have HP 3820 deskjet which I recently reinstalled and It refuses to print black; the message is an incompatible black cartridge although the colour is fine. The black cartridge concerned works in my wifes HP printer although a different model. Both machines use the same type cartridge. This is a problem I haven't come across before, until recently when I reinstalled my operating system.. All other devices and programs on my XP system all work perfectly. I think I need a new printer but am interested is what could have caused this effect. Any ideas; I don't like faults I don't understand

Try wiping the contacts on the cartridge/printerhead as well as in the printer with isopropyl alcohol or meth.

Thank you Wildwood. Why didn't I think of that when I have isopropyl alcohol. It must be the machine as the cartridges work in the other printer.
