If you mean how do they know from birth then I can't help as I have never had a kitten from that young

I have had many cats (and they have had a few kittens in their time) and I always found that mum cleaned the kittens up in the first few weeks herself. When the kittens were a little bit older (about 3 weeks), I used to simply pick them up and pop them in the (clean) cat litter tray - they very soon started to use the tray. They actually really enjoyed the cat flap... what a brilliant toy that was ! In...out...in....out.....in....out... hehe When they worked out that hunting (twigs, leaves and worms) was good fun they used to bring their finds indoors for me too! Not good for me though as I'm not too fond of worms....
