It could be this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eats,_Shoots_&_Le aves that they were trying to deliver? :-)

Sorry, didnt explain, when i used to like others had a parcel that needed collected from the royal mail, i was told to collect from a delivery office with at least 24 hrs passing, but now on the card i have some choices like as requested your item has been left "in a safe place"or with your designated neighbour, and the it says alternatively they will pop back betweem 6 and 9pm and you guessed they havent ticked any box apart from saying its back at the delivery unit why bother giving me alternatives!!!!
You haven't designated a neighbour, you may not have a safe place, and items have to go through the system after attempted delivery - the 24 hours is so you don't waste time going to collect something which they can't find because it hasn't gone through the motions yet.
And aside from the evening delivery bit, of which I know nothing, all of the options are available all the time.

hi post dog the man in the know never had any option apart from wait 24 hrs to collect from delivery office, but now have as i requested what!!, in your safe place, or with a desinated neighbour,or alternatively we will pop back tonight between 6 and 9pm needless to say none of those boxes ticked!!!
Well the if something is taken back, then obviously it is not going to be ticked as left elsewhere, so that is not your option but the posties. A safe place for me is usually hidden out of passing sight, with a note on a card or your letter telling you where it is. Being on a regular delivery, I also tend to know who is in and when, or who I can ask to take something in. That said, this time of year especially, the delivery may not be down to your usual postman, maybe a driver or just someone who doesn't know anything about you, so taking it back is really the safest option all round - you would soon moan if it was nicked because it was just left there.
You can ring the office and specify any day for re delivery, tho as with other deliverers, not a certain time, just a window.
